Safety when using airless spray equipment

Skin injection hazard

High pressure fluid from gun, hose leaks or ruptured components will pierce the skin. This may look like a simple cut but it must be treated as a series injury that could result in amputation. Seek out immediate professional treatment.

Always make the machine safe when changing tips or leaving the machine unattended.

  1. Keep fingers behind the trigger when not spraying
  2. Use the safety trigger when the gun is not in hand
  3. Turn the priming/spray knob to the prime position
  4. Turn the machine to the OFF position

Priming the Unit

Please note: Always flush the units with water prior to loading the paint.

  1. Place water under pick up and select the prime position.
  2. With the unit switched on, turn the pressure knob clockwise and run until the water circulates through the pick up and return tube
  3. Turn the pressure knob anticlockwise so that the machine stops.
  4. Turn the prime knob to spray position and point the gun into the bucket.
  5. Pull the trigger and keep pulled while at the same time turning the pressure knob clockwise to start priming fluid line. Keep the gun trigger open at all times.
  6. Once water flows freely out of gun, turn pressure knob anti-clockwise until the unit stops. Only then should you release the gun trigger.

The unit is now ready for loading with paint. Repeat the above steps but replace water bucket with the paint can.

When priming paint through the fluid line, pump the water from the fluid line into a waste can until paint starts to come out of the gun. Then, circulate paint up the fluid line, out of the gun and back into the paint can for 60 seconds to make sure that there are no air bubbles trapped in the fluid line.

Fit the guard and the correct tip. The unit is now ready to commence spraying.

Airless

When preparing to spray you must always set your pressure to suit the tip size and different viscosities of paint. Always start with a low pressure and check the pattern. Increase pressure until you get an even spray pattern. Too much pressure will result in overspray and extra paint usage.

  • Start at a low pressure and increase until even fan pattern.
  • Fingers or tails occur from low pressure or incorrect tip size.

Air Assisted Airless

When preparing to spray you must always set your pressure to suit the tip size and different viscosities of paint.

Unlike airless spraying, check your pattern and spray with a low pressure using the airless setting on the unit. Increase pressure until tails just start to ‘fuzz’.

Once the tails are ‘fuzzed’ change the switch on the unit to AA and introduce air to tidy up the fan pattern as below:

Always set the air compressor regulator on the main unit to FULL PRESSURE and then control the air pressure from the variable control knob on the gun.

Spray techniques

  • Hold gun approx 30cm from surface.
  • Hold straight, both horizontally and vertically to the surface.
  • Tilting will cause uneven poor finish.
  • Point and move the gun straight to the surface for a consistent quality finish.
  • Fanning will cause an uneven finish and over spray.

Cleaning machine after use

Please note: Always use the pressure switch to start and stop the machine.

  1. Remove paint can from pickup tube and replace with a bucket of water.
  2. Remove tip and guard and with trigger pulled use the pressure switch to pump paint back into can until water flows through the gun.
  3. Flush water through the fluid line for 60 seconds with the trigger pulled at all times, recirculating the water into bucket under the pump.
  4. Always use the pressure switch to start and stop the machine.
  5. Set the pump to prime and leave running for 10 minutes. The paint particles in the water will scour the pump clean.
  6. Flush with clean water through the pump and fluid line picking up clean water and pumping dirty water into separate bucket.
  7. Machine is now clean.
  8. Remove bucket of water and allow to drain.
  9. Finally prime pump with Graco Pump Armor or Wagner Pump Saver and allow to drain.
  10. Your unit is now clean and protected, ready for next usage.

Trouble shooting

Piston pump wont prime - airless or air assisted.

If you find that you cannot prime your pump, the chances are that the ball at the bottom of the pump is stuck. This is a simple fix with the Graco/Wagner knock down pump.

Using a hammer, a single hit of the pickup tube in an anti-clockwise direction will loosen the pickup tube. Unscrew the tube, remove and then turn upside down.

The following parts will come out:

Push a cleaning brush upwards to clean and release the upper ball.

Clean all parts and re-assemble. Your pump should now prime properly.
