To achieve a quality paint finish, it's important to find the right paint spray gun tip. Here are things to consider to help ensure you select the tip best suited for the paint you’re using and the job you’re working on.
With an extensive range of paint spray gun tips available, it can be difficult to work out which option is right for your job. However, the right tip can make a significant difference in the quality and efficiency of your work, so it’s worth taking the time to find out how to select the right one. Here’s what you need to know.
The numbering system for paint spray gun tips references the size and flow rate of the tip. Usually, the tip will have three numbers. The first number indicates the fan length and should be doubled to find out the fan length in inches. If the tip number begins with a five, the fan length is 10 inches wide.
The second two numbers represent the orifice size, which determines the flow of the paint through the tip. A higher number will allow for a higher flow rate, while a smaller number will provide a reduced flow rate. The size is measured in thousandths of an inch, and if the last two numbers are 17, the orifice size is 0.017 inches.
When selecting your tip, it’s important to consider the needs of the job you are working on. Different jobs require different spray patterns, flow rates and coverage capabilities, as well as different types of paint.
For a large surface, a tip with a wider fan will help you cover more area quickly. However, when painting small objects with intricate details, a narrow fan can provide a more controlled application. Different paint types also have varying viscosities and characteristics, so choosing the right tip can help prevent clogging or an uneven application.
If you or somebody on your team is new to spray, it can be a good idea to start with a smaller tip size while they practice and develop their technique. Alternatively, if you have extensive experience using a paint spray gun, you may find you can go up a size and complete the job faster.
When you match the tip size to the skill level of the painter, you can deliver great quality on all paint jobs.
