Commercial Interior – Workplace and Retail Winner

Richards Stanisich

Sarah & Sebastian Armadale

What the judges said

"As a retail concept, the Sarah & Sebastian store by Richards Stanisich in Armadale’s luxe shopping strip is an exquisitely refined exemplar whose singular identity would set a benchmark anywhere in the world. As an exercise in colour use, this singularity is pronounced through the masterful use of the striking Dulux Delta Break green, and the interplay of reflective materials to heighten the customer’s reading of it. Luxurious elements of velvet, gloss and mirror are united by this dexterous colour treatment, which sets it beyond fashion or retail norms into an aspirational realm. Where metal leaf meets organic textures within the dark, moody spaces, the shimmering ocean and its giant kelp forests are called to mind. The intended effect, ‘to develop a space that fosters exploration and nurtures the brand experience’, is completely transformative."

Andrew Parr, SJB, judge.

Duet

Comma – Byron Bay

What the judges said

"Beyond the beige-on-beige aesthetic often associated with the ‘new Byron’, Comma by Duet is a colour-saturated spa experience, radiating with intensity. The brief to refresh the public zones and transition spaces has been embraced with a soothing yet forthright palette in which functions are distinguished by colour but tonally connected, and further united by a glossy ceiling throughout. As an expression of the designer’s fearless use of colour, it is employed as a way-finding tool through the existing, irregular floor plan, and the subtle shifts from cool to warm shades, from zone to zone, result in an all-encompassing experience. White is entirely absent from the scheme, which sees once-overlooked hues enthusiastically embraced – warm biscuity yellow, derived from dawn hues at Cape Byron, as well as deep red, greentoned mustard, smokey purple and dirty blue – and no element has been overlooked."

Studio Shand

Buon Gusto

What the judges said

"Unashamedly embracing its suburban heritage, Buon Gusto by Studio Shand, is a collection of purpose-built artist studios within the envelope of a 1970s pizzeria. Its success lies in embracing this former identity, modestly but playfully imparting its Italian origins through colour and texture: terracotta, brick and gingham bring a smile to the mind. The simple structure’s exterior palette of muted greens folds into the interior, where it meets a warm blend of gold, beige and white, deliberately pared back to serve as a backdrop for the artists’ work. Honey-toned accents maintain the warmth, playing upon the original ‘popcorn’ ceilings, custom joinery, panels, skirtings and trims. It is an understated but highly strategic restoration, imbuing contemporary interiors with heart-warming nostalgia."
