Water based vs. Oil based enamel

  • Dulux Super Enamel is a tough traditional enamel finish designed for use on doors, architraves and timber trim. Available in high gloss (interior/exterior) and semi gloss (interior).

  • Dulux Super Enamel delivers a traditional oil based paint that dries to a beautiful smooth finish. Oil based enamels are inherently prone to yellow with time.

  • Dulux Aquanamel® is a low odour, non yellowing, water based interior and exterior acrylic enamel that dries to a glossy, tough and chip resistant finish.

  • Dulux Aquanamel can be used in most areas traditional solvent based enamels are used, with all the time saving benefits of an acrylic paint and it is easy to wash up in water.

  • Available in Gloss and Semi Gloss sheen levels (interior/exterior) and Low Gloss for interior only. Use Dulux Aquanamel Low Gloss to more closely match your low sheen or matt wall finish.

Colour choice guide

Once you’ve chosen your ideal wall colour, it is important to find the right shade of trim to complement your new look.

As a guide we recommend using a lighter shade than your main wall colour. This could be the same colour with less tint, half or quarter strength, such as Dulux Lexicon paired with Dulux Lexicon Quarter. Alternatively, select a new lighter white, but be sure to keep with the warmth of the wall colour, matching cool with cool and warm with warm tone.

Pick your sheen level from the Dulux Aquanamel range, some people are after a Gloss to make the trim pop, whilst some prefer a contemporary look in Low Gloss for a seamless transition from the walls.

Matching your wall colour can be tricky, see below our selection for our Most Popular Whites.

Choosing the right sheen level

The higher the sheen, the higher the shine. The higher the shine, the more durable your surface will be. Choose the right sheen level for you with these handy tips.

Low Gloss

Reduce the appearance of imperfections on your interior doors, windows and trim. Use where a more seamless transition from wall to trim finish is desired.

Dulux Aquanamel Low Gloss

Dulux Aquanamel Low Gloss is designed to more closely match your low sheen or matt wall finish.

Semi Gloss

A semi gloss is a good mid-level sheen that’s ideal for doors, trims and cupboards.

Dulux Aquanamel Semi Gloss

Dulux Aquanamel can be used in place of traditional oil based enamels, which not only saves time, but has the added benefit of paintwork not turning yellow with time.

Gloss

Highly reflective, a gloss finish is ideal for areas that need to be extra durable and clean. But be warned, it doesn’t hide imperfections very well.

Dulux Aquanamel Gloss

Dulux Aquanamel can be used in place of traditional oil based enamels, which not only saves time, but has the added benefit of paintwork not turning yellow with time.

The uniformity of sheen levels is important. To achieve an even finish, prime and seal your surface first. Find more information in our how to guides.

Project ideas & tips

Dulux Aquanamel can be used around the home and for individual projects. Get a fresh look on your front door, or perhaps update an old piece of furniture.

Updating your furniture

Updating a space can be as easy as a coat of paint on a piece of furniture. Try it at home and explore a range of your favourite colours.

  1. Ensure your furniture is clean of dirt and give it a light sand all over. Wipe with a damp cloth.
  2. Once dry, use a medium sized brush and undercoat with Dulux 1 Step Acrylic Primer, Sealer and Undercoat. Allow to dry for 2 hours.
  3. Apply 2 coats of your chosen colour in Dulux Aquanamel, a water based enamel which is fast drying and easily washes up in water.
  4. Your furniture is now as good as new, well done!
