Learn how to ‘colour burst’ an open plan living space
Interior stylist Julia Green transformed an all-white living, kitchen and dining space into a room bursting with colours and texture inspired by the Journey palette from the Dulux Colour Forecast 2024.
Add personality and fun into your home with the Dulux Journey palette, a perfect curated selection to inspire the transformation any room transformation.
The yellow-greens, rich reds and blues of the Journey palette draw influence from travel, cultural differences and bohemian charm. Any of the colours can be dialled up or down in intensity and still work beautifully and harmoniously together. It was the perfect palette to evoke warmth in this modern space.
“The best thing about the 2024 Dulux Colour Forecast palettes is that all of the hard work is done for you. The carefully considered palettes are designed to take the brain strain out of companion colours that work well, so when all else fails, look to the experts who have done the hard work for you – it’s foolproof.”
The owners lived with the colour on the ceiling and walls for a few weeks to see how it made them feel and to watch light interact with the immersive colour throughout the day before approaching the rest of the space.
This calm, nurturing hue was chosen for its safe base that created a relaxed, conversational space and easily allowed the introduction of other colour and styling changes.
“They loved the soft and welcoming atmosphere it created and would ‘sigh’ upon entering the room, which sums up the visceral effect colour can have on the soul,” explains Julia.
When choosing colour for a room, think about the mood you want to create. Importantly, select a colour you won’t tire of easily that works with a wide variety of hues, because it’s always much easier to change up accessories and décor items.
Keep in mind the small details: fresh flowers, fruit and a few vessels in different shapes and finishes on the coffee and dining tables add impact to your scheme.
Dulux colours Carmen, Evening Blush and Antique White U.S.A® inspired the cherry red and white stripe Warwick fabric used on the banquette seating. Painting the dining table in Dulux Aquanamel® in Swedish Blue provided a strong centrepiece bookended by other neutral choices from the Journey palette.
Decide where to add bursts of accent colours, but look at ways to connect them so they aren’t necessarily standing alone without company.
To create a cosy seating area, a neutral couch was chosen to create a grounding tone-on-tone effect against the wall colour, Lilac Light in Dulux Wash&Wear®.
Nodding to the contemporary boho overtures that feature heavily in the Journey palette, bursts of accent colours based on palette colours Hay Wain, Xena and Bruised Burgundy were added to furnishings and decor.
To add textural interest, liven up your sofa with a luxurious throw and a medley of heavily patterned scatter cushions in different shapes and fabrics. Fun tassels, woven fabrics, colourful handmade vessels and wicker lighting fixtures can also soften a space.

Solstice starts with inspiration from the pared-back Scandinavian design style, but adds to this a Mediterranean and desert influence – from the Australian outback to the African savannah, the palette brings together warm colours with cooler accents and detail such as braiding and primitive sculptural forms.
Journey is about the story of an interior – from bringing together global influences from our travels to reflecting on the history of our ancestry through objects and items handed down through time, the trend is maximalist in nature with an eclectic palette to reflect this.
