“Clear, simple and elegant, this exhibition of more than 140 gelatin silver photographs by Carol Jerrems at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, is distinct for its complex and layered visual links between artworks and the spaces they occupy. The display was conceived as a chromatic ribbon, inspired by the artist’s contact sheets, and harnesses the power of bold colour to offset the exhibited works, in a sublimely edited curation. Blue, powder-coated steel poles punctuate the space in a geometric pattern reminiscent of Mondrian, while a contrasting rust-orange hue saturates occasional display boards. The combination resulted from rigorous site testing and the viewer’s experience is distinct from each aperture. It illustrates the designer’s clarity of thought and understanding of the use of recessive and dominant colours."
