What the judges said...
"In a post-war housing estate of modest brick homes, this project surprises and delights with its strikingly understated but (potentially) trend-setting use of colour. More specifically, the Dulux Yellow Varnish paint applied to the external pergola lifts the structure from a purely functional element to a personality-driven link between the interior and exterior, the original dwelling and the addition. Powerful in its restraint, this colour is used as what the architects describe as ‘an experiential tool, reflecting changing seasons and light … creating visual warmth and framing the landscape and the sky’. The impact of this particular yellow was discovered during early on-site paint tests, which uncovered its impact upon the colours, spaces and materials of the home, subtly altering the way they are perceived depending upon the time of day and weather conditions. Although a bleached yellow, its freshness is equally relevant as a contemporary stamp and a heritage nod, driving a unanimous vote for this award winner."
