Latest Initiatives :
The team at Beverley, South
Australia recently took part in the Trees for Life growing project
and is now growing 1000 seedling or 20 boxes of 11 different
species for land reclamation. There was a high level of
enthusiasm shown by the employees in growing the seedlings on
site. As a part of being green, the employees also developed
a water-wise system for watering. Rain water from the office
roof is collected into a rainwater tank which is then micro sprayed
around a raised racking system and is controlled by an electronic
timer. With the 1000 seedlings, it is anticipated that it
will help to offset as much as 13% of the carbon emissions
associated with freight out from the site each year. Besides
the positive contribution towards the environment, the program is
also seen as an on going initiative that encourage employees to be
greener at home and in the workplace
100 Day Green Challenge

In March 2009, the team at Beverley
site launched a 100 Day Green Challenge as a step
forward to improve its environmental footprint with particular
emphasis on the office, lunchroom and amenities areas.
The challenge targeted improvements
in energy management, recycling, water reduction,
minimizing paper and office supplies and optimising travel and
transport. The program was not only adopted to
promote sustainability amongst staff and meet selected goals, but
all to be achievable and measurable.
Some of the fantastic initiatives
included:
On-Site Recycling
Improvements made to on-site
recycling with an objective of minimising all solid waste generated
on site. Currently for every 1000kg of products produced on site
less than 3kg of waste is generated. We have improved our
recycling by 15% to where we are now recycling 80% of all
packaging/wrapping materials on site. Lunchroom
recycling bins were also introduced to reduce waste to landfill and
encourage staff to be greener by recycling right as a part of
cultural change on site. Other initiatives including battery
recycling for staff and purchasing 100% recycled photocopy paper
and toilet paper.

Water Management
The team implemented planned water
initiatives include the capture of rainwater for on site use,
installation of small dishwashers and use of waterless urinal which
could result in an estimated 14% reduction in site water use
(saving 310 kilolitres or the average usage of two Adelaide
households)
Energy Savings
Energy savings of around 2 to 4%
have already been achieved during the 100-Day period through the
installation of energy saving down lights, motion sensors to
prevent lights being left on and using 'switch off' stickers as
reminders. Also by installation of energy saving 200 CFL
globes with the existing 400W mercury halide globes in warehouse
has a greater impact in 50% reduction in light use which saves 4.5%
site electricity use.

Warehouse, Beverley SA
Giving Back to the Community
At the end of the 100 Day Challenge, the team embarked on a
community project by planting native trees at the Patawalonga Creek
near Adelaide Airport where volunteers are revegetating the area to
help protect and enhance the riparian native vegetation plus the
creek is also an important haven for fish and tortoises.
