Did you know?
- Single pack primers and topcoats cannot prevent the corrosion
of steel, particularly in areas anywhere near the coastline or in
internal, high humidity areas such as indoor swimming pools. High
performance protective coating systems, including zinc rich
primers, are required in these situations.
- Preparation and painting of steelwork in shop not only results
in a vastly superior finish that lasts much longer, but is also
significantly cheaper than doing the work on site.
- Hot dip galvanising is only one way of achieving galvanic
corrosion protection. A zinc-rich primer can offer superior
galvanic corrosion protection, and can be readily topcoated. A hot
dip galvanised surface will require degreasing and surface abrasion
before topcoating.
- Steel is often delivered with what looks like a smooth, bluish
coating. This blue layer is millscale, a type of ferrous oxide, and
must be removed prior to painting, otherwise the millscale will
cause the underlying steel to corrode.
- Sharp edges on steelwork must be ground off to a minimum of 2mm
radius before applying any protective coating. Without removal, the
coating will pull away from the sharp edge, resulting in inadequate
protection at this point. The result is edge corrosion.
- There is almost as much steel in a concrete structure as there
is in an equivalent-sized steel structure. Concrete needs steel
reinforcement to give it flexural strength.
- The only thing that prevents the rusting of steel reinforcement
in concrete is the high alkalinity of the concrete. If the concrete
is protected against acids (carbon dioxide, acid rain, etc) by the
use of protective coatings, then the steel reinforcement won't
corrode.
