Empowering African mothers in Melbourne
The stunning colours of Africa have provided a striking mural and backdrop for the garden where African mamas can sit, prepare food from the work of the vegetable garden and connect.
Building resilience and positive change
Dulux is proud to support the work of community charity, Afri-Aus Care and its help for African migrants and people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Its Empowering African Mothers Project focuses on working with women going through traumatic experiences because of resettlement challenges.
The project enhanced the centre's existing garden which already feeds a community and provides a space for recovery, rest and learning horticulture. This project has increased its capacity to be more sustainable and provide an improved therapeutic community wellbeing space.
The garden also provides a safe space to speak with multi-disciplinary health professionals such as NDIS support workers, culturally appropriate counsellors, psychologists, speech therapists, horticultural therapists and occupational therapists across all age groups.
Creating a village
“For us African people, having a village to raise a child was not here when we arrived. Navigating through services has been hard and that’s why our kids are falling through the cracks.
"We are now collectively rebuilding our own village, in Springvale. We’re looking for ways to help the mamas and their families walk along the right path.
"Through this Enpowering African Mothers project we are creating endless opportunities for the women and their families, they are learning English, cooking, sewing, and gardening, they are offered employment pathways and coming together to work with their children sharing culturally appropriate stories and their way of living in Australia."
